The first appearance of Uncle Tom's Cabin was as a serial that ran from June 1851 to April 1852 in an abolitionist weekly publication called The National Era. It was printed in book form in 1852. This anti-slavery novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward slavery and it acclaimed yet today. It was the second best selling book of the 19th century, following the Bible. It was still the most popular novel three yrs post publication and is said to have laid the groundwork for the Civil War.
