The Canterbury Pilgrims are among the most vivid people in all literature. Chaucer's Greatest achievement, the Prologue to the Tales, is varied and a vital portrait of 31 men and women of 14th century England. the General Prologue makes clear what is obscure in the speech, ideas, ideals, and customs of Chaucer's unforgettable pilgrims and illuminated the entire age in which Chaucer lived. Dr Muriel Bowden has expanded important notes found in good editions of The Canterbury Tales with the hope that the late 14th century will take on the colors of actuality and has brought all pertinent comment on the Prologue into convenient compass. The general reader will be fascinated by the wealth of information concerning Chaucerian England, and by the astute and witty interpretations of various lines. The book was received with unanimous acclaim and has become a valuable book for the scholar and the student.
