This is a postmodernist novel presenting a fictionalized account of the collaboration between Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in their surveying exploits in Cape Colony , Saint Helena, Great Britain and along the Mason-Dixon Line in British North America on the eve of the Revolutionary War in America. The novel is a narrative told for the point of Rev. Wicks Cherrycoke - a dubious clergyman - who attempts to entertain and divert his extended family for his own amusement and to secure his coveted status as a guest in the house. He claimed in his stories to have accompanied Mason and Dixon on their journeys. His tale intermingles Mason and Dixon's bios with history, fantasy, legend, and outright fabrication. Cherrycoke's story wildly varies throughout the novel depending on who is in the room listening. It is adventurous and heroic when twin boys are in the room, and veers away from the erotic chapters when more "prudish" family members are present. Pynchon employs an exaggerated version of spelling, grammar and language of late 18th century which emphasizes the intended anachronism.
Mason & Dixon was one of the most acclaimed novels of the '90's. Lauded as inventive and funny, extravagant and unexpected. This copy is a collectible First Edition for any library.
