Few men enjoyed cavalry life more than the author, James Harvey Kidd, a midwesterner who became a Union Trooper. Prancing horses flashing sabers and massed troops galloping into battle combined to make Civil War cavalry of both sides a dramatic sight. The author was one of those dashing cavalrymen who participated in more than 60 battles and left the army after three yrs wearing a general's star. The pride and exuberance Kidd felt as a soldier are evident throughout the pages of his memoir. At the close of the war he took the Michigan Cavalry west to present day Montana on an expedition against the Sioux and Cheyenne. He established a post at Fort Reno Wyoming.
