No civilian who fought for the Southern Confederacy had a more spectacular wartime career than John Brown Gordon of Georgia. In 1861 he led a company of volunteers off to war. Four yrs later he had engaged in every major campaign fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. He ended the war commanding half of Robert E. Lee's forces. He became one of the most beloved figures in the South. He was daring and intelligent, bold and courageous. His performance as a general was so outstanding that when the end came at Appomattox, Gordon was given the honor of leading the Confederate Army on its surrender march into history. He began writing his memoirs in the 1890's and they were published a yr before he died. This acclaimed book is one of the romance and the bloody, the dramatic and the dreadful.
