The author is a son of an American President, brother-in-law of a Confederate President, Southern General, and last commander east of the Mississippi River to surrender. He is remembered for his literate military memoirs, Destruction and Reconstruction. Despite his pedigree, heroic command, and prowess as a soldier, the war's end saw him a broken man. His refusal fo request a pardon at the end of the war resulted in his citizenship being revoked, his land seized, and his holdings confiscated, ruining him financially. He refused a pardon because he believed his cause to have been correct and honorable. He worked tirelessly to restore Southern order, citizenship to Jefferson and others, and made a living at variable jobs. His memoirs were published just days before his death.
