Most troops in the American Civil War came from civilian life. Most Johnny Rebs and Billy Yanks were simple farmers, tradesmen, and students with one thing in common; they found military life unforgettable. The author, John Henry Worsham, was such a citizen soldier. Two weeks before the firing on at Fort Sumter, he joined a Richmond militia unit which became part of the 21st Virginia Infantry Regiment under Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, later known as Stonewall Jackson. From then on, Worsham saw almost uninterrupted combat. From the Seven Days Campaign to Manassas, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, he even escaped injury at the bitter fighting of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. It took him 20 yrs after the war to write this book, but he produced one of the most sought after memoirs of Confederate Army life. The book is full ofd descriptions of battle and daily life, anecdotes and humor, all coming from a disarmingly honest man.
