This is a near fine (almost like new) collectible leather bound hardcover. 1982 Time Life Books photographically reproduced from the 1866 First Edition. This copy includes the original Collectors Notes. Bound in black leather, this edition features find binding appointments such as sewn binding for durability and aesthetics. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. NOTE: there is mild flaking off of the gold gilt page edging top edge, see photo. Gold lettering on black leather hardcover. All three outer page edges tipped in gold gilt with the top edge being the one showing visible wear. Attached red ribbon attached bookmark. Binding tight and straight as new. Crown octavo boo size or 5" x 8" with 368 pages.
The Civil War was a new kind of war in many ways. One novelty was the presence of newspaper correspondents who went into the field to report the conflict firsthand. One of the young first American was correspondents, George Alfred Townsend was the youngest, wrote the most, and became the best known. He covered battles form the Shenandoah Valley to Petersburg and Richmond, where he was one of the first correspondents to enter the captured capital. His press reports of Lincoln's assassination cemented his national reputation.
