This novel follow the lives of Becky and Emma and their friends and family during the Napoleonic Wars. First published as a monthly serial, it was published as a single volume in 1848. The subtitle, A Novel Without a Hero, reflected the authors interest in deconstructing his era's take on "literary heroism". The novel if framed as a puppet show taking place at a fair. Thackeray uses the novel to expose the human weaknesses mostly related to greed, idleness, and snobbery along with the deceit and hypocrisy that accompany them. The novel is a satire of society as a whole, emblematic of hypocrisy and opportunism.
