Inside the Army of the Potomac The Civil War Experiences of Captain Francis Adams Donaldson has been edited by J. Gregory Acken. At the outbreak of the war, 21 yr old Donaldson enlisted in the 1st California Regiment (later known as the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteers) of the famous Philadelphia Brigade of the ll Corps, Army of the Potomac. He fought at Ball's Bluff and was captured, and also participated in the Peninsula Campaign until wounded at Battle of Fair Oaks.
Once recovered, he accepted a promotion to Captain in the Corn Exchange Regiment (also known as the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers). From there he participated in all major campaigns and battles in the East including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and more.
For more than 125 years his extensive letters and diaries laid untouched in the Civil War Library and Museum in Philadelphia. The author edited the remarkable collection and made them available for the first time. They are detailed and descriptive accounts written from camps and battlefields.
