This is a very good hardcover, NO slipcase as originally issued, slipcase missing. 1961 Heritage Press, includes original Sandglass pamphlet. This copy is very good inside and out. The inside pages are very clean and actually still crisp. The binding is tight and straight There is very light spotting inside front and back cover, see photo, but does not carry over to rest of inside pages. Green hardcover boards are very good, clean but there is fading to spine, see photo, but lettering along spine clean and clear. Royal octavo book size or 7" x 10" with 579 pages.

Victor Hugo wrote the novel during his 15-year exile on the island of Guernsey. The book completed a sort of trilogy with his novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The novel is a thrilling maritime adventure and commentary on the rise of the Industrial Revolution. It centers on Gilliatt, a reclusive fisherman and social outcast who is feared by his superstitious neighbors.
