The Toilers of The Sea by Victor Hugo was originally published in 1866. It explores the determination of human will against the untamable power of nature. Victor Hugo wrote the novel during his 15-year exile on the island of Guernsey. The book completed a sort of trilogy with his novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The novel is a thrilling maritime adventure and commentary on the rise of the Industrial Revolution. It centers on Gilliatt, a reclusive fisherman and social outcast who is feared by his superstitious neighbors.
