Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and The Civil War was originally published in 1898. This is a Stackpole books reprint. James Gilmore first interviewed Lincoln the day after the Civil War erupted in 1861 and over the course of the war and came to know the President intimately. This book is the firsthand accounts of the meetings with Lincoln. It covers the response to the attack on Fort Sumter, the Emancipation Proclamation, and more. Gilmore also wrote about encounters with Horace Greeley the newspaperman and his behind enemy lines interview with Jefferson Davis in 1864.
