Chambers, Sr editor of Time and espionage agent, first accused Hiss of being a spy in 1948. At the time Hiss was president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former official in the State Dept. When Chambers produced documents he alleged were turned over to him by Hiss for transmission to the Soviets, Hiss was indicted. Hiss was convicted and served time after which he was released into obscurity that the convictions forced upon him.
