Conceived in Liberty: Joshua Chamberlain, William Oates, and the American Civil War is a 1997 dual biography by historian Mark Perry. The book details the parallel lives of the Union and Confederate commanders whose troops famously clashed at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. The legendary contest helped seal a victory at Gettysburg and opened a door to Union victory in the Civil War. The author draws on archives, letters, wartime journals, and more to bring readers an accurate historical narrative. He also traces the stories of other major figures of the time including Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown, Elizabeth Stanton, Lee, Grant and others. He uses these figures as a prism that chronicles the North and the South in 18th century America.
