This is a near fine (almost like new) 7 volume set of hardcovers. First AMS Press edition from the Methuen 1909 Edition, London. This set is near fine inside and out. Inside pages on each volume are still crisp and clean. Each volume has color illustrated maps front and back endpapers. Each volume features fine binding appointments, brown leather quarter trim with gold lettering and design front and spine. Fine sewn bindings for durability and ascetics. Each hardcover board is near fine front and back with only hints of shelf wear. Volume 7 has a mild "bump" top front right corner of hardcover boards. Otherwise, all are near fine. Each volume is standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" each.
The 1974 AMS Press edition of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is an unabridged 7-volume reprint of the celebrated 1909 J.B. Bury edition. It is considered a collectors edition or its quality, as it features quarter-leather binding, clear text, and all of Gibbon's original footnotes.
