Vexed and Troubled Englishmen by Carl Bridenbaugh is subtitled The Beginnings of the American People. The book is a widely acclaimed historical work detailing the social conditions of early Stuart England that drove mass emigration. Ordinary Englishmen and women found much that was happening disrupting and disturbing, and a large minority of them came to think of themselves as supernumeraries of whom the land was weary. They were truly vexed and troubled. This book tells their story. The author tells of the "chaps" of the middle and inferior orders in England; and explains what it was that impelled some 80,000 of them to forsake their homes and homeland and seek now lives elsewhere. Most went to the "New World" called America. Their lives are vividly portrayed in this social, economic and cultural history.
