This is a very good hardcover. 1979 Franklin Library Edition. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Hardcover boards are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear corners/edges. This edition from Franklin Library boasts fine binding appointments even though it is not a full leather bound edition. The fine binding appointments include hubbed spine, marbled endpapers, Smyth sewn binding, and the hardcover boards feature tan cloth binding with gold design and brow quarter leather trim with gold lettering along spine. Attached satin bookmark. All three pages edges tipped in gold with only very light wearing to the gold gilt. Octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 309 pages.
A Farewell to Arms was first published by Scribner Publishing in 1929. This is the 1979 quarter leather bound edition from Franklin Library. The book is a first-person account of an American serving in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army The novel follows the love affair of the expatriate American and an English nurse. Considered one of Hemingway's best works, the novel was not published in Italy until 1948 because the regime considered it an insult to the Armed Forces with an eluded-to anti-militarism theme.
