The Civil War in the American West by Alvin M. Josephy Jr. is a comprehensive history of the Civil War as it was fought from the western fringe of the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Ocean. It portrays in rich detail the battle, personalities and issues involved. The author tells of how in the early months of the war a Confederate Army penetrated as far west as Tucson and Santa Fe before being stopped by Union armies on a fast march from Colorado. It also makes clear Native American Indian involvement and how volunteer groups charged with keeping open the western trails for Union troops fought against the Plains Indians. Battles along the bayous of Louisiana and North Texas are recounted. The book was praised as a remarkable contribution to the military history of the Civil War.
