This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1995 Gramercy Books. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Grey hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with only a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is clean and shiny with only very light shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 411 pages.
The Oregon Trail Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life in 1848 by Francis Parkman is a classic 19th-century travel memoir. First published in 1849, the narrative recounts the 23-year-old Boston historian's daring 1846 summer expedition through the American West. This edition is finely illustrated by Frederic Remington with black and white sketches. It is a tale of trappers, traders, hunters, settlers and Indians. It reads like a western novel but is a classic historical text . The Indian way of life is portrayed along with American soldiers bound to conquer the Mexican Army. Parkman lived and traveled for a time among the Sioux and writes vividly of a culture that would suffer greatly from the taming of the West. The book is rich in characters and natural wonders. Parkman brings to life both the cultures and the natural wonders of the environment as he traveled putting his naturalist and horticulturalist background to work along with his amazing historical narrative.
