Old Hickory's War Andrew Jackson and the Quest for Empire by David S. and Jeanne T. Heidler reveals how no one was indifferent about Andrew Jackson. They either idolized or reviled him. People either agreed with Jackson or found out later that conflict was inevitable. The book shows just how ruthless and determined Jackson could be in pursuit of his aims. Jackson was a hero after the Battle of New Orleans at the end of the War of 1812, but also had notoriety for his campaigns against the Indian nations. He was also a duelist who left a man dead, leaving a lesson that those who got in his way could end up dead.
Since the war with Britain was over, the Spanish clinging to Florida, along with the Seminoles, were now in Jackson's way. He started his own war, invading Florida without authorization. IN the end he got away with it, adding Florida to the Union. The book is rich in detail and history of the exploits of Jackson.
