It is one account of a northern woman's view of the war. It offers a vivid wartime portrait of the war developments and a testament to the contributions of union women. Livermore was an editor, lecturer, and abolitionist. She was the only female journalist admitted to the Republican National Convention that nominated Lincoln for president. In 1861, she left her family and volunteered for the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Her efforts from nursing to organizing raised more than a million dollars for relief work. She earned the respect of Grant, Sherman and Lincoln.
