Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson was originally published in 1962. The book exposed the harmful effects of pesticides, particularly DDT, on the environment and human health. The result sparked the modern environmental movement. It exposed how chemicals travel through food chains and can cause widespread ecological damage. Carson's courageous fight with the chemical companies was inspirational and led her to become a leading naturalist and environmental conservationist. The book was a follow-up to her exceptional sea trilogy, The Sea Around Us, The Edge of the Sea and Under the Sea Wind.
