A Way Through the Wilderness by William C. Davis is subtitled The Natchez Trace and the Civilization of the Southern Frontier. It is a history of the southern frontier, the area that today includes primarily Mississippi and Alabama. The author describes the movements of pioneers and settlers from Tennessee in the years following the American Revolution. The most traveled route, and the most fraught with danger, was the Natchez Trace. The book tells of the mostly friendly and peaceful relations between the settlers and the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians. Included in the history is the struggle of the homesteaders to establish schools, churches, and stability, along with everyday life.
