Why did Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester fortune, spend the last half of her life and $5,500,000 building a house that contains 160 rooms? The mystery remains unsolved to today. In 1884 she moved to CA and began her obsession that lasted the rest of her life. She purchased an 8 room farmhouse and for the next 38 years construction never stopped. Rumors swirled that she did it under the advice of psychics. Was it for the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles? We may never know but the book is lavishly illustrated with photos of the sprawling mansion that is now a California Registered Historic Landmark and a San Jose Historic Landmark.
