This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1999 Greenhill Books. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Blue hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. For four long and bitter years, Brandt was caught up in Napoleon's attempt to subjugate Spain - The Peninsular War - fighting and being hunted by bands of Spanish Guerrillas. In 1812 his unit was ordered to take part in the invasion of Russia. 2,000 strong, his regiment of Polish infantry was completely destroyed in the epic retreat from Moscow - only 60 men returned. The memoir is a gripping narrative that conveys the power and destruction of the Napoleonic epoch.
