Armies of Pestilence The Impact of Disease on History by R.S. Bray brings to light the impact of disease on history and the world. Infectious disease put an end to the Golden Age of Athens and wrecked Justinian The Great's dream of restoring the Roman Empire. Yet history has minimized the role of infectious disease leaving a distorted view. This book goes far in correcting that view. The author surveys the principal epidemics from Biblical times to the present, in each case discussing the origins, symptoms, mortality rare and social effects. Where disease cannot be definitively identified, such as in the case of the plague of Athens, he reviews the most scholarly opinions and presents the best theories. He gives special attention to the infamous Black Plague and includes chapters on malaria, smallpox, cholera, influenza and more.
