This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1999 Random House Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Brown hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear and feature tan quarter trim. The accompanying dust jacket is very good, clean with only light shelf wear BUT there is a very small tear to jacket front bottom right corner, taped to prevent additional damage. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 327 pages including index.
We Band of Angels by Elizabeth M. Norman is subtitled The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese. It is a gripping narrative where the main characters never kill or even shoot at the enemy, but are nevertheless heroes. They were under constant shell fire, constantly hungry, and dealing with diseases despite a shortage or lack of proper medicine. With little to no sleep or recreation, they were truly a band of angels who inspired all the men they were there to help. It is the story of women searching for adventure and caught up in the danger and drama or war. Newspapers called them the "Angles of Bataan and Corregidor". They became the only group of women captured and imprisoned by the enemy. Their flight to avoid capture, subsequent surrender and imprisonment, liberation and homecoming is a story of endurance and heroism.
