Young Men on Fire A True Story of the Mann Gulch Fire by Norman Maclean is an assembly from witnesses, historical evidence, and scientific research that puts in context the August 5th, 1949 Mann Gulch fire in Montana. The United States Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters jumped into the sky above the fire in the Montana wilderness and in less than two hours, all but three were dead or fatally burned. The author first saw the Mann Gulch fire as it still burned in mid-August, 1949. Even then he knew he would one day become part of its story. He spent 14 yrs studying and reliving the fire. It is the story of Montana, firefighters, wildfires and especially the story of a young and proud crew who had yet to count the odds and consider a tragic outcome.
