For millions who visit the Smokey Mountains Cades Cover is a major attraction. It is a living museum of Southern Appalachian culture. But before it was a park attraction it was an isolated mountain community first inhabited the the Cherokees and later by pioneers.
Cades Cover The Life and Death of a Southern Appalachian Community 1818-1937 by Durwood Dunn is a historical investigation of of a southern mountain community. Using a rich trove of documents previously unavailable, the author sketches the early pioneers, their daily lives, beliefs, and struggles. He also corrects early stereotypes of the mountaineer - the romantic vision of locals colorists such as Mary Noailles Murfree, the picture of degradation and desperation painted by the "Mountain Muckrakers", and the contention that mountain people had no leadership of sense of community. In Cades Cove, geographical isolation did not lead to cultural of economic deprivation but to a close-knit community with strong traditions and local pride. It is a remarkable case study about the evolution of Appalachian society as a whole.
