Washington's Crossing by David Hackett Fischer is a narrative revealing the crucial details and difficult choices made by the generals, and civilians on both sides. Six months after the Declaration of Independence, the was seemed all but lost. British forces routed Americans at New York, occupied three colonies and advanced within sight of New Philadelphia. But Washington and others refused to let the Revolution die. On Christmas night he led his men across the Delaware and attacked the exhausted Hessian garrison at Trenton. A second battle followed and the Americans held off a counterattack by Cornwallis's best troops. After Washington's men stole behind enemy lines and struck them with defeat at Princeton, the British were badly shaken. This book describes in detail the military campaign of 1776-1777.
