Pegram was one of the most prominent artillerists in the Army of Northern Virginia. He participated in almost every major battle in Virginia. Pegram shared the values of the Southern elite and the author argues that he entered the Confederate service to defend a way of life. The author looks at Pegram as a case study to explore the view in the antebellum south.
