The Military Memoirs of General John Pope by Peter Cozzens and Robert I. Girardi is a memoir by the Civil War Union General. He was a controversial and misunderstood figure of the war. Before being called east in 1862 to lead the Army of Virginia against Lee, Pope compiled an enviable record in Missouri and as commander of the Army of the Mississippi. After his defeat at Second Bull Run, he was sent to the frontier. in 1886 he was asked by the National Tribune, a newspaper in D.C., to write articles on his wartime experience. Over 5 years in 29 installments he wrote about the war as he experienced it. His "war reminiscences" were among a select roster written by Civil War commanders. He writings were detailed with sketches of some of the war's most illustrious characters. Among them is his superb firsthand account of Lincoln's journey from Springfield to Washington in early 1961 and a remarkable vivid picture of the enigmatic secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton. This edition contains a foreword by John Y. Simon.
