This is near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1986 University of North Carolina Press. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are actually still crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Burnt orange hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying dust jacket is clean and shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 399 pages including index.
First published in 1934, thirty years after Longstreet's death, James Longstreet Lee's War Horse, covers each of the Generals campaigns in detail. This edition contains a new foreword by Gary W. Gallagher. The courageous Longstreet should have earned a place alongside Lee and Jackson but his post-war career was embroiled in controversy. He criticized Lee at Gettysburg and became a Republican which was considered by most former Confederates unforgivable. His critics shifted the Gettysburg blame to Longstreet and he became an outcast. He was excluded from reunions and given neither a statue or biography.
