Gentleman and Soldier The Extraordinary Life of General Wade Hampton by Edward G. Longacre is a sweeping story of the Civil War in the South. It is a sweeping biography of Wade Hampton lll, a Confederate general whose remarkable life provides a unique insight into the entire history of the Civil War in the South. At the outbreak of the war, he was one of the richest planters in the south. He managed a dozen plantations in two states. When the war broke out, despite his reservations the the Confederacy could win, he bankrolled the creation of the Hampton Legion. In 1862 he became second in command to J.E.B. Stuart. He fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. In 1864 he succeeded the mortally wounded Stuart. After the war he returned to his ruined plantations and spent the next decade trying to restore his wealth. He went on to become a governor and senator.
