His legacy was Memorial Day. He was a dominant player in politics of the Gilded Age and a 3 term senator. The Civil War made him a star but more than that, it was the epiphany that changed his political and social values. He changed philosophy, parties and fought for African Americans and woman's suffrage. He served under legends such as Ulysses Grant and William Tecumsah Sherman. By 1865 he was a major general leading an Army and the best volunteer soldier the war produced.
