The authors begins with a hair-raising maritime tale in which the yachts high tech navigation equipment failed and left the crew to rely on the stars. Next, he steps back several centuries to explain how seafaring exploration got to that point. Overall the book is a rich history of the most important navigational device of all time - the magnetic compass.
