This is a very good larger hardcover, NO slipcase as originally issued, slipcase missing. 1949 Heritage Press. This copy is very good inside and out. The inside pages are very clean and actually still crisp. The binding is tight and straight. Marbled hardcover boards are good, showing light shelf wear but clean and solid. Imperial octavo book size or 9" x 11" with 66 pages.
This edition of Crainquebille by Anatole France has been illustrated by Bernard Lamotte. It has been translated by Jacques LeClercq. The book is a critique of the French legal system and social justice of the time. The book a novella originally published in 1903, was later adapted for film. Themes of social injustice and the legal system are prominent. The story tells of Jérôme Crainquebille who sells vegetable on the streets of Paris. He is jailed for insulting a policeman and fabricated evidence finds him convicted. After his release no one will support him any longer and he is outcast from society. Turning to alcohol, he is about to give up when a young boy takes him by the hand and encourages a fresh start.
