Grant and Twain by Mark Perry is subtitled The Story of a Friendship That Changed America. In the spring of 1884, Ulysses S. Grant took the advice of Mark Twain and agreed to write his memoirs. Neither realized this decision would profoundly change their lives and the course of American literature. Grant was racing against the spread of cancer and over the next 15 months he and Twain developed a close and intimate relationship. At the same time Grant was writing, Twain was struggling with his great novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This deeply moving narrative reconstructs the months when Grant and Twain inspired each other. Grant desperately wanted to leave his family in financial stability and at the time of beginning the memoirs he was bankrupt. And Twain promised great returns for the rights to edit and publish the memoirs even though his own finances were teetering. The book is moving and inspirational while giving insight to the times and the men.
