This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. First Edition from The First Edition Society, 1976 Franklin Library. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Bound in black leather, the cover feature gold design front and back with gold lettering along spine. The leather binding is also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. Additional fine binding appointments that are standard with Franklin Library include hubbed spine, navy blue silk moire fabric endpapers, attached satin bookmark, fine Smyth sewn bindings and acid-neutral paper. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 826 pages including index.
This is Roosevelt and Churchill by Joseph P. Lash. The Roosevelt-Churchill correspondence was opened to historians in 1971-72. It reveals the breathtaking magnitude of the communications along with figures so magisterial and charismatic that the story is deeply moving. The author's message to readers indicates he originally thought one volume would permit coverage between the two men from 1939-1945. He soon realized that the events of Pearl Harbor and the beginning of the war were a story in itself. He included how both men watched the rise of the Axis powers with revulsion. The author concludes his message to readers: "1940-41 were freedom's most perilous years. They were also for Roosevelt and Churchill, "their finest hour"." The book is a massive history and narrative of both men.
