This is a very good larger hardcover, we are including the original dust jacket which is acceptable as present, very worn and torn. 1948 Pantheon Books Edition. The hardcover itself is actually still very good inside and out. NOTE: previous owners name neatly written and dated 1948 inside front cover, see photo. Rest of inside pages are still clean w no foxing and only very light natural tanning from age. The binding is tight and straight. Maroon hardcover boards are also very good with only light shelf wear that includes minor "bumps" to corners and features "DANTE" embossed front and tan quarter trim with maroon block design containing gold title/author/translator/illustrator names. The original dust jacket is being included and considered acceptable as present - NOTE it is torn in half and has numerous tears and wearing. Larger hardcover, imperial octavo book size or 8.5" x 11" with 188 pages.
This edition has been translated by Lawrence Grant White and contains engravings by Gustave Doré. This Italian narrative poem was finished by Dante around 1321 just before his death. It is an imaginative vision of the afterlife in a medieval worldview. Divided into three parts; Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, it gives an image of divine justice in due punishment or reward. It is an allegory as each canto can contain alternative meaning and it is quite complex. It has been a source of inspiration for artists over 7 centuries.
