This is a good smaller hardcover bound in leatherette cover. 1918 Boni Liveright. This copy is good inside and out. NOTE: previous owners stamp appears inside front cover and second page, see photos. The inside pages only have very light natural tanning from age and are good and clean. The binding is still tight and straight. It is bound in green leatherette, flexible cover and the cover is also good and clean. Modern Library BL logo in gold front and gold title lettering along spine. Modern Library logo design front and back endpapers. Smaller size book designed to be carried around in pocket or purse for reading anywhere. 12 mo book size or 4.5" x 7" with 173 pages.
Boni and Liveright was founded in 1917 and produced "pocket books" of the great classics for average readers to be able to afford them. The leatherette flexible bindings were produced from 1917-1929. Subsequently, bindings were changed to cloth and later hardcover or "buckram" bindings.
This is Creatures That Once Were Men by Maxim Gorky. Originally published in 1897, the novella is a work of social realism that depicts the harsh lives of destitute people in a Russian lodging house. Following residents of a dilapidated lodging house run by the cynical but compassionate Aristid, their tragic pasts re revealed along with the struggles for survival, dignity, and meaning in the face of extreme hardship.
