This is a good smaller hardcover bound in leatherette cover. Circa 1920's Modern Library. There is no copyright date given inside but this copy can be dated to 1917-1929 because of the leatherette binding. This copy is good inside and out. NOTE: there is a gift inscription "To Harold betwixt the last and next birthday with best wishes Rose 9/24/26", see photo. The inside pages only have very light natural tanning from age and are good and clean. The binding is still tight and straight. It is bound in green leatherette, flexible cover and the cover is also good and clean. Modern Library logo in gold from and gold title lettering along spine. Modern Library logo design front and back endpapers. Smaller size book designed to be carried around in pocket or purse for reading anywhere. 12 mo book size or 4.5" x 7" with 173 pages.
Boni and Liveright was founded in 1917 and produced "pocket books" of the great classics for average readers to be able to afford them. The leatherette flexible bindings were produced from 1917-1929. Subsequently, bindings were changed to cloth and later hardcover or "buckram" bindings.
This is Zuleika Dobson by Max Beerbohm. It contains an Intro by Francis Hackett. this was the authors only novel. It is a satirical romance about a beautiful conjurer who visits Oxford University and causing a mass suicide among smitten undergraduates when she rejects them. The book exploring themes of love, obsession, and social standards through a dark comic lens. It penned the famous line "Death cancels all engagements".
