Junior Deluxe Edition books were a series of children's books published from the late 1940's through the 1960's. Originally published by Nelson DoubleDay Publishing, there have been multiple publishers over the years. Some of the versions feature multiple stories and most of those are abridged volumes. Generally, the volumes featuring single stories are complete.
The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain was first published in 1881. It is a historical fiction story about two boys in 16th-century England. They are identical in appearance: impoverished Tom and royal Prince Edward. They swap clothes and lives which leads the prince to experiencing the harsh reality of poverty. Conversely, the pauper enjoys royal luxury, until they must switch back when the king dies and Edward must claim his throne. The story is a satire on social injustice. It explores themes of identity, class, and the contrast between appearance and reality. This edition is nicely illustrated by Peter Spier with black and white sketches and a full color frontispiece.
