This is a very good hardcover, NO dust jacket, jacket missing, but does include the original insert pamphlet. 1956 Junior Illustrated Deluxe series Nelson Doubleday Publishing. This copy is very good inside and out. The inside pages are very good, clean with only very light natural tanning from age The binding is tight and straight. Hardcover boards are very good with only light shelf wear and mild fading along spine. Octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 220 pages.

Junior Deluxe Edition books were a series of children's books published from the late 1940's through the 1960's. Originally published by Nelson DoubleDay Publishing, there have been multiple publishers over the years. Some of the versions feature multiple stories and most of those are abridged volumes. Generally, the volumes featuring single stories are complete.

This is Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington. To explain the insert that accompanied this volume, the inserts were place in the book and featured the NEXT months volume. So given this insert is actually for this title, Penrod and Sam, the previous owner removed the insert from the PREVIOUS book received and placed it in the following months book to match the insert with the titled edition. Inserts were place in the series to let subscribers know what title was coming the following month. It is a nice touch to have the insert matching the book title as it was saved and place in the book when it arrived.

Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington was originally published in 1916. It is a sequel to Penrod and that follows the mischievous adventures of 10-year-old Penrod and his best friend, Sam. Set in a small Indiana town before World War One, the book chronicles their escapades. They form secret societies and play dangerous games. The story was viewed as a nostalgic look at childhood. This edition is nicely illustrated by Gordon Grant with black and white sketches and a full color frontispiece.
