The Great Explorers has been edited by Robin Hanbury-Tenison. In this book 40 of the greatest explorers are described, their lives revealed, and their motives and passions examined. Stories such as Marianne North who began her voyages at age 40, Francis Garnier who nearly went insane following the course of the Mekong, and Edward Wilson who twice traveled with Scott to reach the South Pole fill the book. From Lewis and Clark to European explorers, history unfolds. Many of the journeys are vivid firsthand accounts. The book is finely illustrated with paintings, photographs and maps. 204 illustrations accompany the text as readers experience adventure through the eyes and words of the explorers.
