Toward the Light of Liberty by A.C. Grayling is subtitled The Struggles for Freedom and Rights that Made the Modern Western World. The author presents a narrative that the hallmark of Western civilization over the past 5 centuries is the series of liberation struggles without which the ordinary citizen in Western countries would not enjoy the rights and freedoms we now take for granted. They began with often violent conflicts in the 15th and 16th centuries to allow independent thought uncontrolled by the church or the Inquisitions. This led to the 17th century and Europe, including the Thirty Years War and the English Civil War which were followed in the 18th century by the American and French Revolutions. The book details triumphs and sacrifices made by those seeking change and how hard achieving victory was.
