At the center of the story are statesmen of the day - Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, John Calhoun and Cherokee leaders who tried to save their people. It is a firsthand account of the forced march across the Mississippi along a path of misery and death. Survivors reached the Oklahoma territory Jackson marked for them only to find their bloodiest days of the ordeal were to come.
