The Paper by Richard Kluger is subtitled the Life and Death of The New York Herald Tribune. The story begins in pre Civil War New York where two men, the Herald's James Gordon Bennett and the Tribune's Horace Greeley, invented the newspaper as we know it. Bennett was a cynic who brought aggressive honest reporting to journalism for the first time and Greeley had a passion for social justice. The two papers merged in early 19th century. The cast of characters is vast and revealing. Some of the best and most famous staff writers filled the newsrooms. At the close of World War Two, the paper had done more to create modern journalism and was at its peak. The book is rich with history and extensive vintage photos bring the history to life
