This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 2002 Metropolitan Books. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The inside pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Orange hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine and feature black quarter trim with gold lettering along spine. The accompanying dust jacket is very good with only a hint of shelf wear corners/edges. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 327 pages including index.
The Enemy At His Pleasure by A. Ansky is subtitled A Journey Through the Jewish Pale of Settlement During World War One. the author is a Jiddish writer and the book has been translated and edited by Joachim Neugroschel. In late 1914, A. Ansky, the influential journalist, was commissioned to organize relief for Jews on the borderland, caught between warring armies of Russia, Germany and Austria. Thus began a four year journey. The book details his daily struggles to raise funds, lobby and bribe the czar's court, and procure and transport food, medicine and money. It is a wide-ranging view of a world at war.
