When Trumpets Call Theodore Roosevelt after The White House by Patricia O'Toole is a remarkable portrait of Roosevelt after office. It is a thorough and revealing look at a revealing decade of Roosevelt's life. When he left office in March 1909, Roosevelt went on safari. Once home from Africa, he was disappointed in his successor William Howard Taft. He could not resist challenging Taft for the 1912 Republican nomination. When he lost he formed the Bull Moose Party and ran on a third ticket. That split the Republican vote and put Woodrow Wilson in the White House. After the start of World War l, Rosevelt criticized Wilson and and hoped to oust him in the next election. But that turned out to be a failure. Roosevelt's four sons went on to serve in the war, with his youngest son being killed on Bastille Day in 1918. Roosevelt died six months later. This is a deeply moving and historic portrait.
